Hub Bearings? Empty Hub Bearings?

Post  Jim1973 Wed Mar 04, 2009 5:40 pm

Took the Jeep to Les Schwabbie for their "free" rotation and balance and per their normal M.O they called me with some other part that needs to be replaced.

Usually its the Tierod, which I ignore, however this time they said both my Wheel Hub bearings are "worn" and need replaced, especially the driver side.

So Devin and I were talking and he was told the same thing when he took his Jeep in to have looked at, although he figured his needed replacing due to the hard driving he does to "finesse" over obstacles. However we are both wondering if this is BS and a ploy to get our hard earned benjamins.

I just wanted to get your guy's input on this especially since I also need to replace the Front DS Ujoints (hoping that is the source of the new noise) and I now have my 5th header leak to contend with.

I blame the excess water events that occured when I took my friend out to Reiter last saturday.

Its probably BS, but it could also be a good time to upgrade to 30 spline outters with new wheel bearings.

I'll find out for sure on Friday when I get the U Joints replaced. I need to get a DD.

You might find some used unit bearings at the swap meet. They aren't that expensive new though, and are very easy to replace.

Definitely the hubs. Got it up on a lift and ther is way too much play in the driver tire and almost as bad on the passanger tire. I could feel it getting worse this morning and on the way home the brakes are grabbing forcing the front end to the left.

Ordered the hub's will get it fixed on Tuesday.

Had a late but cool night. As many may not already know I am completely inept when it comes to mechanical things, but lastnight my friend Devin and I worked on his jeep lastnight and I learned how to replace wheel hubs, rotars and calipers, axles, Diff covers, Tie rod, drag link, and track bar.

Probably all stuff I should have learned years ago but better late then never Smile
