ARB locker problem (fixed?)
To those who went on the Naches Run this past weekend...you know I had issues with a "fixed" locker that didnt work. Well I went back to Kent 4WD today, where it was fixed in the first place for $311 (New compressor tank, relocation of compressor) and they looked at it free of charge. There ended up being a hole in an air line. WELL, now there is a leak somewhere in the carrier, and they suggested that they tear it open and it could cost a minimum of $300 (parts, labor...) but could be more once they figure it out. Something is leaking inside the carrier itself. Does anyone know their way around these ARB lockers? Any suggestions?? I really want to avoid these crazy labor charges and start doing this stuff myself. At this point...I've thrown so much money at this stupid locker that has never worked 100% in the 3 years I've had it, I could of just bought a whole new locker that is not air and not worry about it.... Honestly, I dont know who to be pissed at lol. Im just pissed at the whole deal.
I asked what he would put in the rear of my xj as far as lockers goes, and he said an ARB. I laughed.

I'd go in there and shove my foot up someones ass if they didn't fix it for free! As for the rear, you could always weld the spider gears.

Re: ARB locker problem (fixed?)
I've considered welding the rear...but the other Jesse's ZJ (one who came with us) is welded and its pretty rough. The little bit of give that say a Detroit would have is good to have for the street. They didnt charge me to fix the air line...but suggested I get the other leak fixed cause it cycles a lot right now. So it "mostly" works right now...
Re: ARB locker problem (fixed?)
There's an ARB rep right here in Renton, let me find out his name & #.
Another thought is to open up the differential and look for the obvious, disconnected/broken copper line, loose fitting?
They seem pretty simple just from pics I've seen for installs. Open it up and turn on the air & listen, or use some soapy water, or something that'll bubble?
What type of axles are you running?

Re: ARB locker problem (fixed?)
Ya I think me and Jesse (red ZJ) are going to pull it apart hopefully friday morning and look for the obvious. I would assume its something simple. Jesse thinks its just O-rings or something.

Check this out at 4wheeloffroad. They make a rebuild kit, but notice what it says the most common problem is...improper installation

Re: ARB locker problem (fixed?)
holy hell. That looks like a bunch of crap I never want to deal with. I'm looking online at Aussie lockers. I think I'm gonna sell my locker. I've dumped money into this thing and I'm done shelling out my money for something that should be working already. I got other stuff to buy!!! So for now, it works, but its going to re-cycle a lot cuz of the small leak in the carrier. Until it becomes a huge leak and stops working, I wont worry about it, but then I will buy a different locker.
Re: ARB locker problem (fixed?)
Man, I think it's time to change locker brands!

Re: ARB locker problem (fixed?)
could be something as simple as the connection to the housing...seen that be for and would be puking out the vent hose...could be a simple and cheap fix.

Re: ARB locker problem (fixed?)
Ya I'm hoping to find something as simple as a connection or an O-ring. If its something deeper than that I just dont have the funds to dump into it to fix it.
Re: ARB locker problem (fixed?)
Hey Jesse. Long time no see
I did the ARB installs in both ends of my rig. I had an air leak in my front unit. It was just pumping air out the diff vent. There are really only a couple of places that they are likely to leak. My problem turned out to be the most simple repair and my fault. The copper tube was a little too close the ring gear which wore a hole through it. I repaired that and life's been good ever since. The next most likely place to leak would be at the big brown O-rings where the air collar slips over the end of the carrier. Sure, it could leak from lots of places, but these are the most likely. I suspect if you just pull the cover and turn it on you'll figure it in short order.
Need more help?
Jeff
