Feedback sought?

Post  Zip on Fri Oct 23, 2009 3:36 pm

Would it be practable to use 1/8" steel diamond plate to cover the halo on my rollbar? Similiar to Jon's aluminum, but weld straight to the halo? I know weight is a concern, but strength & cost (free) are factors also? Just pondering as I'm sewing my tattered bikini top back together once again

Dont do it. I will be heavy and there is a guy that Chris and I know (JD with the FJ40) that did a top like that and hates it because of the weight, and it gets super hot inside when the sun is beating down it all day.

I do not have data, or facts to reinforce my concerns, however as a friend, I would say that diamond plate is no longer cool. Also I think your jeep looks cooler with the soft top. Also I will be interested in the outcome either way, because I am in the same boat.
Funny I was thinking about that today. I think I am going to experimenting with possibly hose clamps and rivets, or something like that. My intent is to have an easily removable top. Since my roof is not flat, I will have to have several pieces. Also a soft top could still go over the top if its really raining, I guess. I definitely am using stop signs, oh I mean aluminum from the store. Very Happy

Thanks for the feedback folks, keep it coming...I'm still sewing

The weight is not a real issue to me right now, the temp could be, but can be controlled with a fan maybe? Just tired of repairing & replacing tops, that's why I don't run a full top anymore

White Knuckler, how are you liking the aluminum lid? How does it address the prior feedback on weight, do you notice it? Temp inside, especially when it's hot out, like in Cali/Ut? Where did you acquire the aluminum & was it a decent buy?

Real sorry now to see Boeing surplus close down, they always carried flat stock

How about cutting board material?
