Re: Rubicon Trail******Attendance Is Now Full********
So I stopped by a Uhaul today to get an idea of what its going to take to Uhaul trailer my Jeep.
If I do everything "legal" like, Truck and Trailer, tell them I am going to California, two way trip = $1800 (Doesn't count whatever their insurance is)
However they will not let me take one of their pickups outside the "local" area (whatever that means) because Uhaul does not own the trucks, they only lease them. They will however let me take one of their 14' Box trucks (Overkill) and a trailer.
Strange enough, if I do everything other then "legal", tell them its going to be "local" 19.95/day plus mileage (1600 mi) x.79/mile = $1465
If I do a one way trip, the prices aren't that much different and I have to go thru the hassle of getting a truck/trailer down south to bring up here one way and there is no guarantee there will be one.
I know other people have used Uhaul but I am getting the feeling most people probably don't give Uhaul all the information.
I will have to look into other options.

So we need to nail down the itinerary on this trip to arrange time off work.
When are we hitting the trailhead, and how many nights are we spending on the trail?

Whatever days are planned Iwill most likely have a buffer day on either side. I will most likely be driving the Jeep so want to take my time there and back.

I need to do the opposite, and minimize the amount of vacation required. The ideal schedule for me would be to only need to take 2 days off, 3 at most...

At this point, Jess and I are probably going to be leaving either Friday eve (Aug 21) or early Saturday (Aug 22) so we could arrive the eve of August 22nd. We would then have 3 days available for the trail (whether or not we run it in 2 days, like we did in the past, or take the full 3 days is up in the air). We'd plan to drive back home Wednesday, August 26th. That's what we're thinking of doing but what are everyone else's plans?

Whats the camping situation while on the Rubicon? I am trying to figure out if I am going to be bringing a tent or not.

Do we wheel well into the evening/early morning? If we only get a few hours of sleep a night then I will be in casa de Jeep and skip a tent.

Last time we spent two nights on the trail - one night at Buck Island Lake, and one night at Rubicon Springs. Rubicon Springs is on private land, and I think there was a fee to camp. Both nights we were in camp well before dark, and had lots of time to sit around and relax. We had 3 days on the trail, I think about 8 hours the first two days and only 4 hours the third day on the trail.

Paul (sizemic on ROF) sent me this link: <Read me...>
Looks like there is a trail maintenance event the weekend we are planning to run the trail. Not sure what that means or how it will impact us...

As far as I can tell, these are the only 2 weeks we are supposed to avoid...

I did go ahead and send an email to the contact person listed on the cal4wheel website to see if I could get more info. I will let you know if I get any response!

Re: Rubicon Trail******Attendance Is Now Full********
Any updates?
I was looking around other forums for information on these FOTR workparties and it doesn't sound like the trails are closed, just that you have to be patient cause you may be slowed down in parts where they happen to be working.
It was specifically mentioned and answered in this thread, 4th post down:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=790578 [url=http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=790578]
Also other threads from past work parties mention other groups being on the trial at the same time and past work party pictures look more like a BBQ then a work party.
I think we should be good.

Great! Probably in the next month or two we'll get more planning/logistics for the trip posted up.
