Front CV Axles for a rubicon. I got some.

Post  mumblewood on Sat Dec 13, 2008 5:53 pm

I am getting the opportunity to test out some new CV Axles for the Rubicon.

They're made by Longfield Super Axles and if you know anything about Toyotas then you know he builds the best!

I am supposed to beat on these to try to break them. If they perform well they will go into production.

I'm getting them installed tomorrow. Pic's on my rig to follow.

LUCKY! Those won't fit my Jeep anyway, but should be a fun experiment.

Congrats again, taking the rig down to Bobby's for install? or doing them yourself? might want to save your stock ones just in case. I was with Bobby when he broke his own axles on the kaner a few years ago. Winching another rig up the big hill, pulling in reverse to get off the tree he was braced against.

Well, looks as though you'll have to hit the hard stuff, if you don't we'll tell Rolling Eyes Bobby does make some nice parts

How long is the testing period? till you break them?

Im waiting for the pic's to come to me but I can tell you that breaking front axles in a shop is a blast Very Happy

We tested a couple stock outers and some popular up graded outers and the CV and it was impressive on how much the CV's can take and the OEM ones cant take.

OEM tested at 10 deg. of twisting and 2000-2500 FT/LBS of torque before breaking.

Popular up-grade #1 tested at 40 deg. of twist and 5000 FT/LBS of torque

Popular up-grade #2 tested at 50 deg. of twist and 4100 FT/LBS of torque

CV's tested at 75 deg. of twist and 6800 FT/LBS of torque at a FULL TURN!!!!!!!

I cant wait to run these and not have to worry about breaking them(but trust me...I will try hard :lildevil: )

This is the axle in a setup housing. Notice the grinding around the bolt holes on the knuckle.

Here are some more pictures to show where and how to do a little grinding or machining for clearance for the boot. Take about a 1/16 off all three bolt hole areas in the knuckle. About a 1/2 inch down this cast is real easy to grind.

I brought it home last night on the trailer(not broke) and from the little I did drive I can tell you that turning was noticeably smoother in 2wd and 4lo.

I cant wait to get it out on a trail soon.
