dana 300 in TJ

Does anyone know of someone running a dana 300 in a TJ? Thinking about upgrading TC and options are 241, dana 300, and atlas. I like the idea of a dana being 6 in shorter than 231 but don't know what kind of fitment issues I might have. Also like abilty of twin stick. Any advice?

Dana 300 is a far better case then the 231. It's gear driven, not chain driven. You can twin stick them, and flip them to a driver's drop, and gear them for 1000 or so cheaper then an atlas. I built two for my jeep before I sold it. The only thing that dana 300's have that are kind of weak are the output shafts. The rear is 26 spline, but if you aren't going to beat the holy crap out of it then I wouldn't worry to much about it. There is a guy in Poulsbo that sells a flip kit to make it a driver drop for 180$. The kit comes with dual shifters, and is really easy to install. The only thing you have to do with this kit, is remove the interlock pin, to get the sticks to work seperately. The only other kit I found to flip it is a Down East Offroad kit and it goes for 650 and is a pain in the but to install. To much time and money in my opinion. The big debate I ran into was people kept asking why not buy an atlas if you are going to spend that much money on a case. The only reason I went that way was, because I didn't have the extra 1000 dollars to put toward a case. Another point I forgot to mention is if you run a Dana 300 you can use the front half of the 231 as a doubler box and be able to run dual cases. The 231/300 kit comes to the exact same driveline length as a stock non sye'd 231. The only thing you would have to do there is get a CV Shaft. HTH

I was leaning that way from the get go and am trying to troubleshoot all the requirements to make it happen. Did you have a TJ and do the 231 to 300 swap? Did you have to get another SYE to fit the 300? I have zero interest in doubling with the back half of the 231. I was thinking that the 300 being 6 inches shorter may require me to trim my belly skid to accomadate the longer driveshaft and it's articulation? I am sure there is more to it.......

You can get dana 300's for around 300$. I wouldn't pay anymore then that if its stock. As far as swapping the 300 in to a tj, yeah you are going to have to get creative about your driveline clearances. I was going to notch the belly pan enough for driveshaft clearance and that's it. In my opinion you won't have to cut enough out to ruin the integrity of the belly pan, so I wasn't going to brace it or anything else. Swapping in a 300 is easy, everything bolts right up. It's basically a like for like changeout. The dana 300 is already a fixed yoke transfer case so you don't have to worry about that. If you have a CV driveline though you will probably need to get a different yoke or make grind the stock yoke and make your own clearances. Personally I would just go buy a U bolt yoke and save yourself the trouble. I also know a guy that has a flip kit up in Mt Vernon, that he might be willing to sell you pretty cheap.
